OPCD Launches Partnership To Address
PTSD Amongst Emergency Telecommunicators

NEW ORLEANS (February 1, 2019) – The Orleans Parish Communication District (OPCD) is excited to announce a partnership with Blossoming Minds Health Center, LLC that will provide specialized mental health services for our emergency telecommunicators.  This new initiative will provide confidential counseling services to staff who may be dealing with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and help achieve a healthy work-life balance.

In a study conducted by Dr. Michelle Lilly of Northern Illinois University, over 800 emergency telecommunicators across the nation participated.  Almost a quarter of those evaluated demonstrated signs and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

“We know that our staff encounter traumatic situations on the daily basis and mental health should be a part of our daily conversations. Self-care is something the agency believes is critical to ensure our telecommunicators provide exceptional service on each call. This is just another intentional resource we are providing to our team to take care of themselves so they can continue to care of everyone else.”, says OPCD Executive Director Tyrell Morris.
