OPCD #SHOWUP Spotlight Jyneco Thornton

OPCD #SHOWUP Spotlight
Jyneco Thornton

In 2019, OPCD began our #SHOWUP Spotlight Series, designed to share the stories of our Heroes Under the Headset who go above and beyond to serve the city of New Orleans. We are excited to continue this series by introducing you to OPCD Emergency Communications Specialist, Jyneco Thornton.

On February 13, 2023, Jyneco received a call from a woman named Deborah Jackson, a grandmother calling for her two-year-old grandson that was having trouble breathing. Jyneco asked her a series of questions to determine what the issue was and from there, what could be done over the phone until dispatch arrived. Jyneco determined that chest compressions were the appropriate intervention and provided step-by-step instructions to Deborah.

Throughout the entire call, Jyneco remained calm, and patient and gave clear instructions on how to perform chest compressions until EMS arrived. Jyneco went above and beyond the call of duty and not only demonstrated excellent professionalism but also humanity, as she was there every step of the way with Deborah and her grandson.

Waiting until dispatch arrives, even if it’s for a few minutes, can be an agonizing experience but Deborah was extremely grateful to have had Jyneco on the phone line with her, during the wait. “I was so lucky to have called and gotten Jyneco,” says Deborah. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without her. I was so scared. She kept telling me to stay calm and stay on the line, providing step-by-step instructions on how to perform the chest compressions.” Deborah expressed relief that her grandson is happy and healthy again and appreciation for Jyneco’s emergency response.

Jyneco has been a Community Engagement Specialist for two years now. “I try my best to bring a positive and upbeat spirit to work every day, especially because this job can be hectic,” Jyneco says. “I enjoy doing what I do, knowing I’m helping someone in need. At the end of the call, it gave me great joy to hear the child cry and it gave me a great sense of relief to know that he was okay before I ended the call.”

We appreciate how you #SHOWUP for people in need Jyneco. The humanity, patience, compassion, and support you showed for Deborah and her grandson did not go unnoticed.
